Beckman Girls Basketball Tryouts

Official tryouts are in the first few weeks of the academic year in late August or early September. The process includes a practice session with the Coaching Staff and returning players that includes a range of drills to evaluate the player’s skills and athleticism. Ball handling, court IQ, positive attitude, and commitment are all very important.Tryouts are relatively short so it is very important that you put your best foot forward. At a minimum, we suggest that you attend the Beckman Girls Basketball Summer Camp.It is a small glimpse into the Program and the expectations that go with it. You will have a chance to meet Coaching Staff, current players, and many of those that will be your competition at tryouts.

Tryouts for the 23-24 Season have concluded. Please check back here to see about future tryouts for the 24-25 Season.

Coaches

Varsity Head Coach

Jason Edgmond

Beckman High School’s Girls’ Varsity Head Coach, Jason Edgmond leads the team with a competitive energy and his sharp basketball acumen. For the past 16 years, he has been coaching girls’ high school basketball teams at the Varsity level in Arizona, Missouri, and California. In addition, Coach Jason has also led his own club teams for the last 8 years. When asked about his first memory of basketball, he fondly remembers, “I was 5-years old when my father took me to watch a Phoenix Suns game. I instantly fell in love with basketball.” From that moment on, a young athlete took shape as he played t-ball, basketball, and eventually tackle football by the time he was 7-years old. His passion for sports was always apparent as he continued playing baseball, basketball, and football throughout his high school career.Jason’s motivation to compete and experience playing a variety of sports from his early years growing up helped spark his interest in coaching while he was in college. He says, “I was always in sports and when I finished competing as an athlete, I still had a strong desire for competition. Coaching was the next natural step for me to take.” His love of basketball and competitive nature are evident as he remarks, “I enjoy the grind of practice and the results it can bring. One of the most rewarding things for me as a coach is to be able to witness a team be at one point and then finish in a much better spot than where they started from.”As head coach, he emphasizes the importance of exemplary conduct on and off the court and also models the attributes of an empathetic leader. Jason’s coaching success can be seen in the way he asks all his players to be committed, accountable, and determined to compete at the highest level possible. He takes a hands-on approach by getting to know each of the girls and is involved with the development and growth of all his players, for both JV and Varsity Teams. In his mission to strive for excellence, he is dedicated to having an impactful program that is more than just high school basketball. He says, “My vision is to create a program where the players feel as if they are part of a sisterhood. Where they know they are loved and part of something bigger than themselves. I want Beckman to be one of the premier programs in OC.”When he is off the basketball court, you can find Coach Jason loving every minute of the day with his wife and kids spending time outdoors. To contact Coach Edgmond, E-mail him here:

Varsity Assistant Coach

Alfonso Directo

In his first year serving as Beckman’s Girls’ Varsity Assistant Coach, Al Directo brings a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience. At the start of his coaching career, he led both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams at the junior high and high school levels throughout Long Beach, then at University High in Irvine where they went to compete in the semi-finals, and at Foothill High in North Tustin for the last 17 years where the Girls’ Varsity Team won the league championship. At the age of 9, Coach Al started playing basketball and continued playing through his first year of high school. At this point, his athleticism, and love of all sports helped prepared him for four years of high school football, cross country, as well as track and field, where he discovered his gift as a high jumper. All the while, he would still play pickup games at the local parks and with teams through the Boys and Girls Club.Coaching was the obvious choice for Coach Al because of his love of people and of basketball. He is convinced that in order for a team to grow, they must win together, but they also need to lose together. In his words, “Teamwork in basketball is the beauty of five people working together as one and not being selfish. I see it as a game made up of fundamentals, energy, happiness, and excitement.”When asked about his first season at Beckman, Coach Al happily says, “My first season at Beckman was a great experience with both the players and their families being so welcoming and committed to the program. I love to see the smiles on these girls’ faces as they walk off the court. They work hard each day. Win or lose, they’re always helping their teammates by pushing one another to be better.”Outside of Beckman, Coach Al enjoys hobbies such as bike riding, skateboarding, traveling to Hawaii, cliff diving, hiking, paddle boarding, and going to Lakers games. He also stays busy and has fun relaxing with his grandchildren, his wife, three sons, and daughter. When it comes to basketball, he believes, “We should just have fun and enjoy the game!” Some wise words we can also carry through life.

JV Head Coach

Drew Cullinan

This season Drew Cullinan came on as Beckman High School’s Girls’ Junior Varsity Head Coach. Prior to his time at Beckman, he spent the last three years coaching boys’ basketball club teams grades 4th-12th in Rancho Mirage, CA.A passion for coaching and basketball have always existed in Coach Drew’s life. He remembers, “I always wanted to coach since I was a kid. I love basketball and always look forward to seeing the growth that takes place over the course of a season.” While growing up, he spent time watching his dad coach teams for Laguna Beach High and Dana Hills High. Eventually, Drew would also play basketball for Dana Hills High. When asked what he enjoys most about basketball, his continued joy for the game is quite apparent, “Everything, every single thing!”Drew’s passion for coaching stems from “enjoying the way a team comes together through hard work to attain goals that may seem impossible at times.” His coaching philosophy is that a team must always follow the “3 E’s”: effort, energy and execution. If a team brings all of these things each day, they will become a more successful team and more successful individuals on and off the court. During his first year of coaching at Beckman, he proudly watched the girls push through adversity and work as a team to become stronger players and leaders. In his spare time, you can find Coach Drew with his wife, Mari and their son, Dominic. They enjoy going to the zoo, Disneyland and other amusement parks, playing catch, practicing swinging a bat, and shooting on the mini hoop.
